UMNO-BARISAN BLOCKBUSTER ELECTION MOVIE WITH 27 DISCLAIMERS?

His balls is now atrophied and he can no longer speak on behalf of anyone in Malaysia!! Sad old cheeky Chua Soi Lek!

What characterizes gangsters?

– An influential international weekly took aim at Malaysia’s lop-sided racial policies in its latest issue and expects both the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) and the opposition Pakatan Rakyat (PR) to pander to the Malay vote despite the risk of further damage to already frail ethnic ties.

A Delhi-based journalist talks, tongue-in-cheek, of starting a magazine on street fashion. In a recent Sunday Times of India column MJ Akbar spoke about the ‘young Hindu woman’: “There is change wherever the eye falls, in whatever the senses pick up: dress, public icons, sexual mores.” Hindu or not, yes, the way young women dress … Read more

This shows the Muslim communities’ stronger spirit of political participation and increased confidence in the democratic process. However, this should not be construed as Muslims’ victory over non-Muslims. Rather this, should be viewed as, and in fact, is merely an indication that Muslims have not been satisfied with the policies of the mainstream political parties.
This development of Muslim dominated parties and Muslim religious organization  that there needs to be a thorough change in their mode of functioning, especially, policies of nominating candidates for election.
The government’s official sermon delivered today suggested that the position of Islam and the royal institution was being questioned because Muslims were selling out the religion to “certain quarters” which it did not name.
The sermon appeared to suggest that Muslims who associate with non-Muslims or stand up for non-Muslim causes were betraying their faith, and echoed a few racially divisive views espoused at the recent Umno general assembly.
It was delivered at all mosques today and was prepared by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim).
A copy of today’s sermon — sighted by The Malaysian Insider — appeared to hit out at Muslims who “conspire with certain groups in questioning Islam as the official religion in this country on the excuse of defending the fundamental rights of others” for personal gain.
It described those Muslims as “deviating from the teachings” of Prophet Muhammad, as well as “committing a big sin, oppressing Muslims and threatening national harmony” in the sermon that was to mark the end of Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin’s five year reign as Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.
“Remember, if Muslims lose their integrity, their pride and are manipulated by others, in the end, Islam in this country will suffer the same fate that has befallen other nations where their people were insulted and driven from the country of their birth,” it said.
The sermon did not directly refer to any one person in particular but appears to echo the political rhetoric heard at the Umno general assembly last week.
According to the Jakim sermon, purported attempts to convert Muslims also fall foul of Islam’s exclusive rights under the country’s Constitution.
It urged all Muslims to unite and uphold the constitutional monarchy system, reminding them that without a ruler, the administration of religion would be chaotic and would cause animosity.
“Avoid involvement in any action that could potentially threaten or pollute the royal institution and disputes what is contained in the Constitution, including that which pertains to Islam as the country’s religion,” it added.
Eligible Muslim candidates need and deserve an equitable share in the election otherwise things may go against the parties’ interests, and ultimately against everyone’s interests.
The fact that given a chance, Muslim candidates can do well in the election has been proven by the PKR This is an example which other mainstream parties can emulate.
So far, the Muslim community led political parties have refrained from partisanship by inducting non-Muslim members and giving them key positions both in the party as well as while giving nominations. Such a balanced policy is a must for any political party in MALAYSIA, not only for the sake of political correctness, but also for its own survival.
Irrespective of who launches a party, the future course of action of a political party must display the spirit of democracy and utmost secularism; otherwise these new parties will also become the victims of communalism and sectarianism from which the older parties have already been suffering.

DAP appears to be gaining ground in seemingly uncharted territory: the Malays.
Despite having been around since the mid-60s, the party has been perceived as a predominantly Chinese-based party, causing many Malays to shy away from it.
This perception, however, according to DAP members, is changing, albeit slowly but surely.
Party member Zairil Khir Johari said that the DAP was only recently able to tap into the Malay grassroots after the 2008 general election.
“Before 2008, the Malay support for DAP was almost non-existent,” he said, adding that the alternative political choice was usually the Islamic-based PAS.
“If you joined the opposition, if you had problems with the government, the natural appeal would be PAS. They have (access to) the suraus and the mosques, which DAP does not have.
“Umno would have its ketua kampung (village chief), while PAS has the religious (advantage), but if the DAP wanted to open a branch in a village, it would be so artificial,” said Zairil, who is also DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng’s political secretary.
DAP’s lack of a large Malay support base for the past 40 years, Zairil claimed, was partially because it was an “urban-based” party; it was more attractive to the city-living Chinese.
The government’s control of the mainstream media did not help the party either.

Malay branches in Penang
According to Zairil, the Umno-linked Malay-based media groups such as Utusan Malaysia blacks out anything DAP-related, unless it was negative.
These factors, according to Zairil, made sure that even urban Malays were kept unaware of the DAP’s handiwork.
However, the party’s entry into the Pakatan Rakyat coalition, coupled with access to the alternative media, appears to have helped its position, Zairil claimed.
He said that the party has been able to open a few Malay branches in Penang, with forays into Perlis as well.
Though acknowledging that its Pakatan allies – PKR and PAS – were there to attract Malay voters, DAP president Karpal Singh said that the party needed to make its own effort in reaching out to the Malays.
“PKR and PAS are there, but we shouldn’t rely on them. We have to go ahead with our own Malay support. Recently, there have been some Malays who have joined us.”
“They’re not shying away from the DAP… but they’re not coming in at the extent that we’d want,” he said.
Karpal said that the DAP had seen some Malay representation over the years, such as through former Bayan Baru MP Ahmad Nor and current Senator Tunku Abdul Aziz Ibrahim.

Even so, he said these efforts into the Malay heartland were not enough.

Muslims are more religious than people of other faiths, according to an international survey.
The research in 24 countries by British research company Ipsos-MORI shows that Muslims are more inclined than other believers to say their religion is the only true one, more inclined to say religion is an important part of their lives and more inclined to say it motivates them to good works, the survey shows.
The survey came to my attention via CNN, who did a long and interesting report, seeking to explain why this might be the case.

MIC will object if any other Indian-based party seeks admission into Barisan Nasional.
MIC president Datuk G. Palanivel said the party “is the single largest party representing the Indians in the Government.

SAMY VELLU IS HERE TO STAY – AS LONG AS HE WANTS. HE HAS BEEN MADE INDISPENSABLE, INVINCIBLE…EVEN IMMORTAL. HE WILL REMAIN AS THE “SAVIOUR” OF THE INDIANS IN MALAYSIA – A GOD-LIKE STATUS HIS “DEVOTEES” HAVE STRENUOUSLY BESTOWED UPON HIM.
THIS STRONG MESSAGE THAT SAMY STILL REIGNS SUPREME WAS DELIVERED BY THE MAJORITY OF THE 1,464 DELEGATES AT THE TRIENNIAL ELECTION OF THE MALAYSIAN INDIAN CONGRESS (MIC) HELD RECENTLY. IT APPEARS THAT THEY WOULD PREFER TO SINK WITH SAMY – RATHER THAN SWIM IN THE CURRENT OF CHANGE.
DR M SAYS “MIC IS SCARED STIFF OF SAMY VELLU”. BUT IT IS THEIR VERY OWN POLITICAL SURVIVAL THEY ARE SHIVERING AND SWEATING OVER! IRONICALLY, THEY FELT VERY SECURE EVEN IF IT MEANT STRENGTHENING SAMY’S POLITICAL STRANGLEHOLD AND FURTHER SUFFOCATING THE WHOLE INDIAN COMMUNITY!
WITH THEIR FUTURE AT STAKE THE DELEGATES WERE NOT PREPARED TO STICK THEIR NECKS OUT. IN FACT, AS DR M ONCE DESCRIBED THE MEMBERS OF THE MIC, THEY ARE “NOT EVEN READY TO STICK THEIR LITTLE FINGER OUT”. SUCH IS THE SORDID STATE OF AFFAIRS IN THE SECOND OLDEST POLITICAL PARTY IN THE COUNTRY.
“EVERYBODY IS PLAYING SAFE. IF I GO AGAINST THE CHIEF, HE’S GOING TO HAMMER ME. THEN I WON’T GET CONTRACTS, I WON’T BE ‘KETUA BAHAGIAN’ (PARTY DIVISION CHIEF),” DR M SUCCINCTLY DESCRIBED THE SAD SCENARIO – WHICH WAS VERY SIMILAR TO UMNO WHEN DR M WAS ITS PRESIDENT FOR 22 YEARS.
SYCOPHANTS
IN THE RUN-UP TO THE POLLS, SAMY FAILED TO DISPLAY THE STATURE OF AN ELDER STATESMAN. HE HYPED ABOUT CHANGE (A HOLLOW PROMISE HE MADE OVER THE PAST 30 YEARS) BUT HINDERED CHANGE BY HANDPICKING A “PRESIDENTIAL TEAM” AND HARANGUING DESERVING CANDIDATES WHO REFUSED TO SUCK UP TO HIM.
HIS SELF-SERVING SYCOPHANTS STUCK TO THE STATUS QUO AND MADE AN ALMOST CLEAN SWEEP – THE POST OF DEPUTY PRESIDENT, THREE VICE-PRESIDENCIES AND 19 OF THE 23 CENTRAL WORKING COMMITTEE POSTS. THE DELEGATES SHORTCHANGED THEIR PARTY WHICH WAS IN DESPERATE NEED OF CHANGE.
AS THEY SALUTED HIM, SAMY BROKE INTO SONG PERHAPS IN GRATITUDE TO THE ARMIES OF HANUMAN (MONKEY GOD) WHOSE INTERVENTION HE HAD DESPERATELY SOUGHT TO SAVE HIS DAY AND IN GREAT JUBILATION THAT HE NOW HAS A TEAM WHOM HE HAD SELECTED AND WHO WOULD SERVE HIM IN SERVILE GRATITUDE!
FOR SAMY THE RESULTS WERE A SOLID ENDORSEMENT OF HIS FEUDALISTIC LORDSHIP. BUT THE SLIM MAJORITIES OF SOME OF HIS MEN, ESPECIALLY HIS INCUMBENT DEPUTY PRESIDENT G. PALANIVEL (WHO SAW HIS MAJORITY OF 495 VOTES IN 2006 OVER SUBRAMANIAM SLASHED TO 82) SIGNALLED A SEVERE SLIDE IN THE SUPPORT FOR SAMY.
SHOWPIECE
SHOCKED BY THE RESULTS, FORMER DEPUTY CHAIRMAN SUBRAMANIAM (SUBRA) ACCUSED THE DELEGATES FOR SELLING THEIR SOULS. FOR SO LONG SAMY HAS USED HIM AS A CONVENIENT SHOWPIECE OF DEMOCRACY IN MIC. ONE SUCH EXAMPLE WAS SAMY’S RETORT TO DR M IN ONE OF THEIR SARDONIC EXCHANGES.
DR M HAD SLAMMED SAMY FOR HAVING STIFLED INDIAN VOICES IN THE MIC. SAMY SHOT BACK LABELLING DR M “THE DESTROYER OF DEPUTIES” – IN SHARP CONTRAST TO HIM HAVING ONLY ONE DEPUTY (SUBRA) WHO LASTED FOR 25 YEARS. OF COURSE HE WAS MUM OVER HOW HE HAD SUBDUED, SILENCED AND SIDELINED SUBRA.
SUBRA INSISTED THAT HE WAS NO COWARD. HE HAD NOT CHALLENGED SAMY “BECAUSE THE PARTY WAS WEAK. I FEARED IT WOULD FURTHER WEAKEN THE PARTY. BUT NOW THE PARTY IS BEING WEAKENED BY THE LEADERSHIP AND I WANT TO BRING A CHANGE”.  SADLY, SUCH BELATED BOLDNESS HAS BARELY GOT HIM AND HIS PARTY ANYWHERE. IT’S LIKE BLOWING IN THE WIND!
HAVING BEEN WITH SAMY FOR 25 LONG YEARS, SUBRA SEEMED SYMPATHETIC TO SAMY AND THE SYNDROME HE WAS SUFFERING FROM: “SOME LEADERS CANNOT PREPARE THEIR MIND TO ACCEPT RETIREMENT…. IT IS A COMBINATION OF EGO, ADDICTION TO POWER AND FALSE IMAGE OF ONESELF … THEY MISGUIDE THEMSELVES.”
SUBRA KNEW THAT THE PARTY ELECTION WAS A DO-OR-DIE BATTLE. SAMY PORTRAYED SUBRA AS “DOING NOTHING” FOR THE INDIANS. SUBRA HIGHLIGHTED THE INSECURITIES OF SAMY, ADDING THAT “THE PRESIDENT WAS TOO AFRAID TO HAND OVER DUTIES TO HIM” AND THERE WAS NOTHING HE COULD DO ABOUT IT.
(SIX MONTHS BEFORE THE LAST GENERAL ELECTIONS, SAMY HAD ASKED PAK LAH FOR “SOME MONEY SO THAT WE CAN BOOST THE MORALE OF THE PARTY”. SAMY RELATED THE OUTCOME: “FIRST HE SAID ‘I’LL LOOK INTO IT’, LATER HE SAID ‘NO’ HE CANNOT GIVE.” AND SAMY’S RESPONSE WAS “…‘WHAT CAN WE DO?”! ).
THE MIC SUPREMO ACCUSED SUBRA OF BEING “…SUBSERVIENT TO MAHATHIR, I DON’T KNOW TO WHAT EXTENT HE IS SUBSERVIENT TO UMNO … HE NEEDS SOMEBODY TO PUSH HIM FORWARD. HE CAN’T STAND ON HIS OWN LEGS …” – LIKE HOW SAMY WAS SUBJUGATED TO UMNO FOR THE PAST 30 YEARS AND TO DR M FOR 22 YEARS?
IT IS VERY OBVIOUS THAT AT 65, AND WITH THE MIC IN A FURTHER STATE OF STAGNATION WITH SAMY AT THE HELM TILL 2012 (I.E., IF HE EVER RETIRES), SUBRA IS DONE FOR IN MIC. THE ONLY THING THAT IS LEFT FOR HIM TO DO IS TO HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MIC AND TO JOIN THE OPPOSITION.
SCAPEGOATS
NO ONE HAS REALLY BEEN INTERESTED IN LIFTING A FINGER TO HELP THE INDIANS AT THE GRASSROOTS. THE MIC DELEGATES HAVE BEEN TOO AFRAID TO “STICK THEIR LITTLE FINGER OUT”, AND SAMY AND DR M HAVE BEEN ONLY INTERESTED IN FINGER POINTING AND CREATING A FACADE OF FIGHTING FOR THEIR CAUSE.
THE BLAME GAME WHICH BEGAN DURING DR ‘S TENURE, CLIMAXED BEFORE AND AFTER THE MIC PARTY POLLS WHEN THE BEST PLAYERS IN HUMBUG, HYPOCRISY, HYSTERICS AND HISTRIONICS PITTED THEMSELVES AGAINST EACH OTHER, EXPOSING THEIR NAKED INTENTIONS AND CONTRADICTING THEMSELVES AND ONE ANOTHER!
DR M HAS LONG ARGUED THAT THE MAIN GROUSE OF THE INDIANS IS NOT WITH HIM BUT SAMY VELLU. REMOVE SAMY AND ALL WILL BE RESOLVED. WHY DID DR M REFRAIN FROM REMOVING SAMY DURING HIS TENURE? WAS IT BECAUSE HE WAS A VERY HANDY “ASSET” THEN TO HOODWINK THE INDIANS?
SAMY HAS SAID THAT DR M “HAD PROMISED THIS AND THAT BUT IN THE END TOLD THE COMMUNITY NEHI (’NO’ IN HINDI)” AND THAT HE “DID VERY LITTLE FOR THE INDIAN COMMUNITY .… DESPITE THE MIC APPEALING AGAIN AND AGAIN FOR HELP, HE REFUSED TO BUDGE”.
SAMY HOWEVER HAS HAD NO GUTS TO STICK TO HIS GUNS ESPECIALLY WHEN THE “GREAT STATESMAN” THROWS DOWN THE GAUNTLET AT HIM. HE BACKPEDALS SOON AFTER HE BOLDLY SETS HIMSELF ON A COLLISION COURSE WITH DR M. SAMY SAYS SUBRA  IS UNABLE TO “STAND ON HIS OWN LEGS”, YET SAMY CAN’T EVEN PUT HIS FOOT DOWN!
DR M (WHO DOES NOT BELIEVE THAT THE INDIANS ARE MARGINALISED) ONCE INSISTED THAT “THE GOVERNMENT GAVE A LOT TO THE INDIANS”. ALAS, THERE IS A LOT MORE TO BE KNOWN! WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE “CRUMBS” THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAD CONTRIBUTED THROUGH THE HANDS OF SAMY AND HIS CRONIES?
IN THE RUN-UP TO THE MIC POLLS, DR M CLAIMED THAT THE INDIANS ARE “FED UP OF SAMY VELLU”. THEY VOTED IN THE LAST GENERAL ELECTIONS FOR THE OPPOSITION OUT OF ANGER WITH SAMY. HE SHOULD STEP ASIDE, STEP DOWN, FOLLOW HIS (DR M’S) FOOTSTEPS IN RETIRING. (BUT HAS DR M REALLY STEPPED DOWN?)
SAMY’S RETORT WAS THAT THE INDIANS VOTED AGAINST THE BN BECAUSE THEY WERE FED UP WITH THE RULING COALITION, AND NOT HIM. HE ALSO TOLD HIS MENTOR OF MANIPULATION THAT HE WAS MESSING AROUND WITH HIS PARTY POLLS. SURELY UMNO WOULD MAKE MINCE MEAT OF HIM IF HE WERE TO INTERFERE IN ITS POLLS!
THE MIC PRESIDENT SUCCEEDED IN MAKING USE OF THE MIC DELEGATES TO SEVERELY CRITICISE DR M AND UMNO “FOR FAVOURING ONLY THE MALAYS AND IGNORING THE WOES OF THE INDIANS FOR MANY YEARS” (MALAYSIAN INSIDER). THE POLLS RESULTS THEY DELIVERED WERE A SNUB AND A STINGING SLAP IN THE FACE FOR DR M AND UMNO.
ONE DELEGATE SUGGESTED A GARLAND OF SLIPPERS BE HUNG AROUND A PORTRAIT OF DR M FOR INTERFERING. UMNO WENT INTO A FIT AND FRENZY. THE DELEGATE WAS SUSPENDED TEMPORARILY. SAMY SAID HE WOULD SAY SORRY PERSONALLY. DR M HIT OUT AT UMNO’S HYPOCRISY AND CONSIDERED THE JIBE RATHER PETTY!
IT DID NOT TAKE VERY LONG FOR DR M TO LAUNCH ANOTHER ATTACK ON SAMY, LABELLING HIS FORMER LOYAL ALLY “A LIABILITY TO THE BN IN THE NEXT GENERAL ELECTION”, AND SENDING HIM A LOUD AND CLEAR MESSAGE: “YOU (SAMY VELLU) HAVE FAILED TO LEAD THE MIC UNTIL YOU YOURSELF LOST”.
DR M REVEALED THAT HE WAS “WORRIED THAT THE PEOPLE’S SUPPORT FOR THE BN (ALSO READ AS UMNO) WOULD ERODE AND THE COALITION WOULD BE THE VICTIM BECAUSE SAMY VELLU WAS STILL LEADING THE MIC”. VERY EVIDENTLY THE FORMER PM IS NOT REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE MIC NOR THE INDIAN BUT THE FUTURE OF HIS DISINTEGRATING UMNO.

SHAMELESS
IT IS VERY OBVIOUS THAT THIS GAME OF BLAME, WILL CONTINUE ON BETWEEN THE BIG POLITICAL PLAYERS WHO WITHOUT ANY CONSCIENCE, WILL GAMBLE AWAY THE FUTURE OF THE REAL LOSERS IN THIS GAME – THE INDIAN MALAYSIAN WHO IS INCREASINGLY DISPLACED, DEPRIVED, DISEMPOWERED, DISILLUSIONED AND DYSFUNCTIONAL.
IN A MALAYSIAKINI INTERVIEW, THE MIC PRESIDENT DISMISSED THE NOTION THAT THE LONGER HE REMAINS AT THE TOP, THE MORE PROBLEMS IT WILL CREATE FOR THE PARTY AT THE BOTTOM. IN HIS USUAL ZEST HE COMMENTED: “ANYBODY WHO SAYS THAT, I WILL SAY HE IS A POLITICAL ZERO”.
VERY IRONICALLY THERE IS NO BETTER EXAMPLE OF A “POLITICAL ZERO” THAN SAMY VELLU HIMSELF. HE HAS LITTLE OR NO RESULTS TO SHOW AS HE DESPERATELY HANGS ON AFTER 30 YEARS. THE MIC RESOLUTIONS OF EACH BRANCH AND ASSEMBLY, AND OF EACH PASSING YEAR, SHOW NO PROGRESS BUT MORE AND MORE EVIDENCE OF MISMANAGEMENT, SCANDAL AND FRUSTRATION.
SAMY HAS NO EXPLANATION AS TO WHY INDIAN MALAYSIANS HAVE FAILED TO FREE THEMSELVES FROM WHAT HE CALLS “THE SHACKLES OF POVERTY” AND WHY ACCORDING TO HIM “THE RUBBER INDUSTRY WORKERS HAVE BEEN NEGLECTED OVER THE PAST 150 YEARS”. NEITHER HAS HE AN ANSWER FOR “THE IMBALANCE OF EQUITY PARTICIPATION” THEY HAVE ENCOUNTERED FOR SO LONG.
SAMY HAS NO PARLIAMENTARY SEAT, NO CABINET OR GOVERNMENT POST. HE HAD NO CONTENDER IN THE ELECTIONS OF THE MIC PRESIDENT EARLY THIS YEAR – THE ONLY REAL CONTENDER WAS DISQUALIFIED. HE HAS NO POLITICAL LEVERAGE. HE HAS NO SUPPORT FROM HIS BN COUNTERPARTS, ESPECIALLY UMNO.
HIS LEADERSHIP IS ONE PROPPED UP BY HIS LAPDOGS WHO HAVE MORE BARK THAN BRAINS AND BOLDNESS AND WHO OFTEN ACT LIKE STREET BULLIES. AFTER 30 YEARS OF BEING “GOD” IN MIC HE HAS GROOMED NO ONE TO BE HIS SUCCESSOR.
FROM A MULTI-RACIAL PERSPECTIVE, HIS RACE-BASED MIC HAS NO LONGER ANY PLACE IN MALAYSIAN POLITICS. SAMY HAS NO TOLERANCE FOR THE TRUTH. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT HE HAS NO SENSE OF SHAME – AND THERE IS REALLY NO FUTURE IN THE MIC! (AND OF COURSE DR M HAS NO CREDIBILITY LEFT TO TELL HIM ALL THESE!)

I understand why Najib is such a worried man. In fact, he must be a very worried man. One of the main reasons why MIC President S Samy Vellu should leave the MIC is because he, along with his group of gangsters, robbed the Indian people of an enormous amount of money through Maika Holdings. And they still remain at large.
Maika Holdings raised RM108 million in 1981 from Indians, especially rural folks from the lower- and middle-income groups. These people were told to use their life savings – and even sell their jewelry – to invest in Maika Holdings because they were told the company would give them returns that were 10 to 20 times their initial investment. This, of course, is sweeter an offer than any licensed bank could make.
Samy Vellu, whose rhetoric needs no introduction, managed to fool these mostly not-so-well- educated individuals into parting with their money.
If you ask anyone who was in MIC at that time about how they organised groups of people to go out there to convince the masses to part with their money, you will be surprised. They even went to the extent of telling would-be investors to sell their properties and cattle to invest in Maika Holdings.
In other countries, this would have been considered a huge financial scandal, not just because of the amount of money involved, but because of the number of people involved in fleecing equally vast numbers of poor and less-educated citizens.
The RM108 million then had a buying power that was 10 to 15 times its value today. In today’s terms, it would be valued between RM1 billion and RM1.5 billion. Shortly after the initial investments were collected, the recession in the mid-1980s enabled the cash-rich Maika Holdings to go shopping for properties and collect fantastic deals.
If those properties were still in the hands of Maika Holdings, the company would be worth some RM3 billion to RM5 billion today. But those properties were sold at below-market prices through shady deals in which more money was transferred under the table than through actual and legal sales agreements.
Some of us may also remember the Telekom shares scandal, in which Maika Holdings was extended an offer to buy Telekom shares during its initial public offering (IPO). But Maika Holdings did not buy the Telekom shares. Instead, Samy Vellu bought them through his personal company, because Maika Holdings, supposedly, did not have the money to do so.
Maika Holdings could have made RM30 million, but this opportunity was hijacked by the sole defender and representative of the Indian community.
Telekom was only the first privatised government department. Since then, many other government agencies and departments have been privatised. As with Telekom Malaysia, shares were offered to Maika Holdings, but the offers were hijacked over and over again by Samy Vellu and his gang.
Using the Maika Holdings money, the gang bought into well-run companies and turned them upside down by appointing their own people to run these companies, squandering away the profits with luxurious parties and lavish parties, and, finally, by closing down these companies. They plundered in epic proportions.
To date, Maika shareholders have received almost nothing for their investments. The Maika Holdings scandal has cost many their life savings, property, opportunities to send their children for advanced education and so much more.
Recently, during a political speech, Samy Vellu announced that he will return RM1.30 for every RM1 invested in Maika Holdings and set a deadline of 100 days to do so. At the end of the deadline, however, he conveniently turned around and said that he has nothing to do with Maika Holdings because Maika Holdings is a business enterprise and he is only the president of MIC.
The managing director of Maika Holdings, Vel Pari, the son of Samy Vellu, then said that he did not know of any such deadline and, as such, is not bound to honour any kind of commitment.
Those who had the courage to go to Maika Holdings’ annual general meeting last year were met by thugs who intimidated and harassed anyone who raised questions about the management. Death threats and armed assaults are not uncommon at Maika Holdings’ annual general meetings.
No wonder the MIC is considered the most violent political party in Malaysia with two MPs shot dead by assailants in recent years, one or two knocked down by cars (in what are supposed to be accidents) and some even slashed by parang-wielding gangsters.
But Samy Vellu and gang have been allowed to continue plundering Maika Holdings without any accountability. And they were never questioned by the government, Bank Negara, the former prime minister or even the present prime minister.
The MIC’s handling of Maika Holdings was a con job approved and blessed by the highest public office. Perhaps it’s because Indians are the disenfranchised lot in this country that Samy Vellu can do anything, as long as he delivers the votes every election.
The government’s total apathy regarding this scandal shows its attitude towards Indians – we are nobody’s children. This injustice – this lack of government oversight – is happening in Malaysia, a country that is, supposedly, a leader among developing countries and is supposed to be a ‘developed nation’ in 12 years.
If the government is serious about showing its commitment to the Indians, start by asking Samy Vellu to step down. Get Maika Holdings cleaned up and bring to justice those who have been responsible for cheating its shareholders.
Don’t be so stupid as to think that all we want are a few temples to be left in a few squatter areas. We know that as long as they are in squatter land, they will have to go. And repairing a few Tamil schools in some estates is like throwing us table scraps.
Show us that the government cares about Malaysian Indians as equal citizens who are entitled to equal protection under the law.
Palanivel was commenting on a statement by Barisan secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor that MIC is a stumbling block for other Indian parties to join Barisan.
“There is no Malay party other than Umno, no Chinese party other than MCA in Barisan.
“We will open our doors for another Indian party if Umno allows another Malay party to join Barisan,” he said.
Palanivel, who chaired his maiden MIC general assembly, said that MIC would not let go of any of its nine parliamentary and 19 state seats it contested in the 2008 general election.
On whether efforts were made to unite the splinter Indian parties, he said the party was in discussion with certain parties.
“It is their decision and we are not forcing them.
“If they don’t want to join MIC, there is no problem.
But if they join, it will make MIC stronger,” he said, adding that some had expressed their intention to join MIC but he declined to provide details.
On MIC, Palanivel said he had directed the branch chairmen to register 200,000 members who were non-voters.
“We will provide incentives like an iPad or even a trip to visit temples in South India if they register 1,000 voters before the year-end,” he said.
MIC has 600,000 members, of whom 390,000 are registered voters.
Palanivel said the RM800,000 allocation disbursed to the 152 divisions would be used to organise Deepavali parties in October to connect with the people.
“This is the first time we have given out such an allocation.
“We will continue to provide more allocations regularly,” he said.
Earlier in his winding up speech, he said the constructive comments made by the delegates would be discussed in the central working committee.
“I promise that I will work for a better future for the community but it cannot be done overnight … we need time,” he said.
